Moonset seen from an airplaine high in the air somewhere over North Altantic in July 2010. Note the clear color deliniation between the troposphere and stratosphere here, and how visibly distorted is the Moon due to atmospheric refraction. The light path between my eyes and the Moon through the air at this moment corresponds to roughly 50 vertical thicknesses of atmosphere, or 300 miles of air under normal condition.
